The Mission of the Yakutat Nature Society is to Protect, Conserve, and Enhance the populations and habitat of resident and migratory birds and other wildlife and fish throughout the Yakutat region.

Our History

The Yakutat Nature Society was founded in 2020 under the direction of Susan Oehlers, Teresa Swanson, and Mary Glaves, with input by current YNS board members. Special thanks to Samantha Lobdell for working through the administrative process to get us up and running!

When the 2020 Tern Festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we took the opportunity to focus on establishing a non-profit organization with the initial primary goal to house and grow the festival, while also providing an additional resource to support the community.

Our Values

Birds

And the beauty and intrinsic value they hold in the Yakutat region.

Knowledge

Derived from local, traditional, and scientific sources.

Education

Of resident and migratory bird research through community outreach.

Habitat

Preservation focused on both aquatic and land areas used by resident and migratory birds and other wildlife.

Culture

And within it, the significance of resident and migratory birds and other wildlife in Yakutat.

Our Committments

We are committed...

To conservation.

And preventing the decline and extinction of resident and migratory birds and other wildlife.

To restoration ecology.

And maintaining and restoring disturbed natural ecosystems.

To biodiversity.

And protecting the quality of life of resident and migratory birds and other wildlife in their terrestrial, marine, and aquatic ecosystems.

To sustainability.

And retaining the environmental health of resident and migratory birds and other wildlife as baselines against species decline and extinctions.

And to community outreach.

And connecting people to the outdoors and raising awareness by educating local community residents and visitors on migratory and resident birds and other wildlife, the importance of their habitats, and conservation issues.
